New look at Jeff Nichols’ “The BikeRiders”

Jeff Nichols, the director behind acclaimed films like “Mud” and “Loving,” is taking on a new challenge with his upcoming film The Bikeriders.” Based on the classic 1967 photo book of the same name by Danny Lyon, the film will follow the rise and fall of a Midwestern motorcycle club through the lives of its members.

The film stars an impressive ensemble cast, including Austin Butler, Jodie Comer, Tom Hardy, Michael Shannon, and Norman Reedus. Butler plays Benny, a wild and reckless bikerider who falls in love with Comer’s Kathy, a strong-willed member of the club. Hardy plays Johnny, the club’s charismatic leader who holds things together until life gets more dangerous and the club threatens to become a more sinister gang.

In a new interview, Nichols talked about what drew him to the project. “I’ve always been fascinated by motorcycle clubs,” he said. “They’re these outlaw groups that exist on the fringes of society, and they’re often misunderstood. I wanted to make a film that shows the human side of these people, and the complex relationships that exist within their clubs.”

Nichols also talked about the challenges of adapting the photo book into a film. “Lyon’s book is a masterpiece,” he said. “It’s so evocative and atmospheric. I knew that I couldn’t simply recreate the book on film, so I decided to tell a fictional story that was inspired by it.”

“The Bikeriders” is scheduled to be released in theaters in 2024.
