Jenna Ortega, star of the upcoming Netflix series Wednesday, has announced that she will not be returning for the seventh installment of the Scream franchise, Scream 7. This news comes just one day after lead Melissa Barrera was fired from the project over social media posts that Production Company Spyglass deemed antisemitic.
Several unconfirmed reports last night indicated that Ortega called her agents to end her contract for Scream 7 in solidarity with Barrera. However, Deadline insists that Ortega’s exit is due to scheduling conflicts with the filming of Wednesday season 2.
Ortega’s departure marks the end of the CORE FOUR, the group of four new cast members introduced in Scream 2022 who were expected to lead the franchise forward. With Barrera and now Ortega gone, it is unclear who will be left to carry the torch.
Despite these setbacks, production on Scream 7 is expected to begin in early 2024. It is unknown who will replace Barrera and Ortega, but it is sure to be a challenge for the filmmakers to find actors who can fill their shoes.
