The 81st Golden Globes

The reception for the 81st annual Golden Globes marks a whole new chapter for this iconic awards show. The Globes are stepping into a period of change following the dissolution of the controversial Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) and the expulsion of troubled members. Great news? The ceremony will now be broadcast on CBS and available on Paramount+, and therefore a new deal. With the HFPA out of the picture, control of the Globes now remains with Dick Clark Productions and Eldridge as they seek to regain credibility in Hollywood and the broader entertainment industry

Diversity and character play a major role, reflecting the updated voting set for the 2024 Golden Globes. The number of nominations in all 27 categories jumped from five to six, giving film and television more opportunities for talent worth having fun with. Not stopping there, two new categories were introduced: Honoring Best Stand-Up Comedian on Television; The similarities drew mixed reactions, reminiscent of the 2022 Oscars controversies “Cheer Moment” and “Fan Favorite” Whether these new changes will have much of an impact this awards season depends on the nominees themselves.

Anticipation runs high for several films expected to dominate the 2024 Golden Globe nominations. Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie,” Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer,” Bradley Cooper’s “Maestro,” Yorgos Lanthimos’ “Poor Things,” and Martin Scorcese’s “Killers of the Flower Moon” are all on the radar. On the television front, contenders like Apple TV’s “Ted Lasso,” Netflix’s “Beef,” HBO’s “Succession,” FX’s “The Bear,” and ABC’s “Abbott Elementary” seem poised to secure top nominations.

The unveiling of nominees for the 2024 Golden Globes will be hosted by Cedric the Entertainer and Wilmer Valderrama, kicking off at 5 a.m. PT/8 a.m. ET on Monday, December 11. Stay tuned for updates as the list of nominees is announced. And mark your calendars for the 81st annual Golden Globes ceremony, scheduled to air live on CBS and stream on Paramount+ on Sunday, January 7 at 5 p.m. PT/8 p.m. ET.
